Many of the leaders were corrupt. You may believe that the master of the vineyard owes those workers more. He employs the workers and not the other way around. Jesus further explained the participation rules of the Kingdom of Heaven, which is only by God's grace. Many will read this parable and remark about how unfair it was for the last group of workers, those who only worked for about an hour, to receive the same compensation as those who worked all day. I believe this is a reference to other such Scripture passages which say that the angels will be sent out to gather out all which offends in God's kingdom and cast it into the eternal fire where it will be burned. This huge story represents a vital truth: it is not the measure of time, which we serve nor the unmistakable quality or significance of our position, which decides our reward. The life which is in the vine produces fruit which Paul describes in Galatians5 as: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control. None are self-appointed. Well, that has to do with empowerment, enablement. That is, a vine produces certain shoots (called "sucker" shoots) which start to grow where the branch joins the stem. It is not activity which glorifies God; it is character, it is what you are, and the way you react to a situation. Both of these are necessary in the Christian experience. We would be foolish to appeal to God for justice rather than grace, for if we really received justice, we would all be condemned. People come and spend a lot of money, staying a week or so at a time. But it is conceivable that the master had a lot of work to do and wanted all the workers he could find to do it. Though it is wonderful when one has the privilege of leading many to Christ, and any of us perhaps can do this on one occasion or another, it is no indication of fruitlessness if you never have had this experience. The Lord requires faithfulness and not necessarily (as judged by human standards) success. They wanted the power and prestige and didnt want anyone to take that from them. In this, they can be utterly Joy, that sense of gladness of relationship with him, will increase as we go. Does it seem fair to our standards that this is the case? We can look at this as a progression from the calling of the Jews to the calling of the Gentiles (Mark 16:15; Luke 14:23). We could see this as people coming to faith in Jesus Christ during different periods of church history or at different ages in life. He was the true vine. As leaders, they should have been leading the people to Him. Let all that be present in the heart, and the face will light up with joy! We should never compare ourselves to others. When we think of its size, how few workers there are! He received a note one day during a meeting that said the following: Dear Dr. Torrey, I am in great perplexity. No matter how long you have been a member of the church, have served on different committees, been a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, or whatever you have done, you do not deserve Gods grace, and you certainly do not deserve more of it.
